Citra and the Brothers’ Bash

Filed under: Beer Week, Scratch BeerTice @ 9:31 am

Many of you probably know we released Scratch #31 last week, the Citra of Brotherly Love IPA, for last week’s Philly Beer Week (PBW). Loaded with Citra hops, which are new to us, this beer is like a tropical hop explosion. If you like a hop barrage, you’re going to like this one. It’s currently on tap at the brewery, but due to limited production, we only have six-packs of the Citra for sale. We also oak-aged a few barrels of this brew for Philly Beer Week firkins, which I can personally attest were terrific as well. I read that there were 1000 events for PBW this year, and it seemed like we filled firkins for most of them! We could’ve done even more, but if you viewed the barrel geyser video earlier, you know the beer gods giveth but they also taketh away. Anway, the oak brought on vanilla, coconut, and oak (duh!) flavors, enhancing the “IPA of the tropics” feel of the beer, and showing off just what fresh oak can do to a 7.5% hop monster.

Speaking of Philly Beer Week, we held our first Troegs Brothers Bash at Johnny Brenda’s Tavern in Fishtown last Sunday, featuring Troegs band Starsan, as well as Up Pops the Devil, and Eli Charleston, and a crazy line-up of Troegs beer. If you weren’t there, you missed out on this one! Hopefully we do it again, as it was a blast, from what I remember. Good music, fun venue, something like 12 Troegs on tap, and a gaggle of brewery employees is guaranteed to be a good time.

Not a bad tap list at all

I can also vouch for the Standard Tap brunch menu, as it gave us all a good base on which to consume far too much beer later. The hipster crowd also seemed to be a big fan of it, so there you go. Later, we drank Sunshines in the courtyard at Swift Half while watching the Flyers unforunately lose on the humongous projection screen. Even though Philly lost, I have to say I can think of few better places to watch a sporting event and drink great beer in a partisan crowd. Just a great atmosphere. After a Pils at Swift Half we convinced our bus driver to take us to Pat’s for John’s inevitable cheesesteak on the way out of the city. Turned out to be just what the doctor ordered, if you were looking for alcohol absorption and an instant food coma. We definitely were.

Starsan rocking the house!

Last but not least, if you stop by for the Citra, be sure to try Scratch #30, our smooth and hoppy take on the Maibock style. There should be enough hops in there even for people who “don’t like lagers.” Cheers!
